The World Energy Council report ‘E-storage – shifting from cost to value’ is the work of 23 leading industry and academic experts from across the world who are in the World Energy Council Storage Knowledge Network. The lead author is DNV GL with PwC making a significant contribution towards the cost analysis. The Storage Knowledge Network is one of 15 Knowledge Networks in the World Energy Council who will all be preparing reports for the World Energy Resources flagship study which will be presented at the 23rd World Energy Congress in Istanbul, Turkey in October 2016.

The key message of the COP21 Paris climate agreement is that business should be part of the drive towards renewable energy and part of the “innovation frontier”, says Christoph Frei, Secretary- General of the World Energy Council in an interview with World Energy Focus. “The long road from Paris is to build on the best technology, to develop and deploy innovation. If you are not on the forefront of this, you may not be around in the foreseenable future”. Frei (47), whohas beenthe Council’s leader since 2009, spells out what “Paris” means for the utility sector, oil and gas companies, coal companies and investors. He notes the world is going through a triple transition: a decarbonisation transition, a market design transition and a resilience transition. To navigate these transitions, “you have to be very clear on where your priorities are.”

Africa’s energy potential is the most underestimated in the world, says Bonang Mohale, the World Energy Council’s Vice-Chair for Africa. But Africa’s future energy system will not look like the one that currently exists in the West, add two energy leaders who are part of the Council’s extensive African network: “Africa will leapfrog the industrial nations. It will move straight to the low-carbon energy system of the future” say researcher Tana Selim Ustun and entrepreneur Samir Ibrahim. “And this will create untold new opportunities.” World Energy Focus looks at what the world can learn from Africa.

The new chairman of the IPCC, Dr Hoesung Lee, intends to interact more with the energy industry. “We are prepared to broaden our scope of collaboration”, he says, in an exclusive interview with World Energy Focus. Lee, a professor in the economics of climate change, energy and sustainable development at Korea University in Seoul, says “industry, the energy sector in particular, needs to be part of the solution to climate change”. He sees “enourmous value” in the “large-scale” deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS).
The Energy Trilemma Index, which is released as part of the Council’s annual World Energy Trilemma report, offers recommendations to public and private decision-makers in the energy sector on how best to deliver competitive sustainable energy systems. It is produced with global management consulting firm Oliver Wyman, along with the Global Risk Centre of its parent Marsh & McLennan Companies, and focuses on breaking barriers to energy investment in 130 countries.
29 October 2015 Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The World Energy Council is to write to all Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change expressing concern over the level of progress and ambition over the state of the climate talks. The clear message from the World Energy Council’s meetings during its Executive Assembly in Addis Ababa is that key actions are required to enable the energy sector to deliver a sustainable energy system.

Clean coal technologies should get the same kind of government incentives to reduce CO2 emissions as other energy sources, such as nuclear power and renewables, are getting, say proponents of coal energy. They warn that if policymakers continue to see coal only as an enemy to be combated, rather than an ally to be supported, the world will fail in its attempt to limit global warming to acceptable levels.

L’occasione è stata la Seconda Conferenza Nazionale sulla Cyber Security Energia, tenutasi presso il Centro Alti Studi per la Difesa e organizzata da Energia Media in collaborazione con WEC Italia e Deloitte. The World Energy Council, Marsh and McLennan Companies, and Swiss Re Corporate Solutions have joined forces with the specialist support of the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development,and over 175 global experts. New emerging risks are posing threats to the energy sector, impacting both the physical structures and the investment needed to evolve the energy system to a more sustainable future. This extreme weather report specially looked at the frequency, severity and exposure of the energy value chain to extreme weather events. It then proposes solutions on how to create systemic resilient energy infrastructures and how to finance it. The report finds that the number of extreme weather events increased more than 4 times from only 38 events in 1980 to 174 events in 2014. Although the energy sector has focused on transitioning in the long-term, the understanding of the vulnerability to risks now has been largely unaddressed, leaving energy systems exposed and the financial risk in energy investments increased.

La conclusione dei negoziati tra l’Iran, i cinque Paesi Membri Permanenti del Consiglio di Sicurezza delle Nazioni Unite e la Germania, lo scorso 14 Luglio 2015, ha portato alla firma del piano di azione comune “Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action” (JCPOA) che prevede una graduale sospensione delle sanzioni economiche nei confronti dell’Iran.
