This 33rd edition of the World Energy Focus starts with a roundup of news from around the world impacting the energy sector: from the mitigated results of the Global Tracking Framework report on progress to achieve UN sustainable energy goals, to Christiana Figueres’ new “Mission 2020” campaign, we explore how access and decarbonisation are impacting the energy sector. At the same time, this edition looks at how new technologies are lowering costs and bringing new prospects in the oil sector, especially for the US Permian basin’s tight oil, whilst cooperation and regional dialogue are creating further opportunities between UK and India and in Arab countries. Commodity prices and climate change policy remain the top issues keeping energy leaders awake at night, according to the latest iteration of the World Energy Council’s ‘World Energy Issues
Monitor’. The survey of 1,200 energy leaders in business, industry, government and academia from 95 countries also reveals that regional integration and resilience issues are likewise high
on the list of concerns.
In its eighth year, the World Energy Issues Monitor 2017: ‘Exposing the new energy realities’ published by the World Energy Council, provides a snapshot of what keeps CEOs, Ministers and experts awake at night in over 90 countries. The monitor helps to define the world energy agenda and its evolution over time. It provides a high-level perception of what constitute issues of critical uncertainty, in contrast to those that require immediate action or act as developing signals for the future. It is an essential tool for understanding the complex and uncertain environment in which energy leaders must operate, and a tool through which one can challenge own assumptions on the key drivers within the energy landscape.
This eighth iteration of the monitor is based on insights provided by more than 1,200 energy leaders to provide over 35 national assessments across six regions.
The report has been officially launched in Washington and Japan on 6 April, will be followed by further presentations at regional events. It will also be sent to government ministries in more than 90 countries with a preview at the United Nations Sustainable Energy for All Forum in New York on 4 April.

WEC Italia – Comitato Nazionale Italiano del World Energy Council – in collaborazione con le associazioni AEIT e FAST ha organizzato lo scorso 29 novembre a Milano presso la sede Centrale di Edison la Conferenza “Le rinnovabili nel sistema elettrico: spunti per l’Italia dallo studio WEC – CESI variable renewable energy sources integration in electricity systems 2016”. L’incontro è stata un’occasione di dibattito e approfondimento delle sfide-opportunità per il nostro Paese alla luce della crescente diffusione delle fonti rinnovabili intermittenti (eolico e fotovoltaico), fenomeno che vede impegnati policymakers, regolatori e operatori di settore nel ridisegno dei sistemi e dei mercati dell’energia.
