Trilemma Champion steps down after five years at the helm
After five years at the helm, one of the energy sector’s influential female leaders is stepping down as Chair of the World Energy Council’s Trilemma Study group. During her time as Chair, Joan MacNaughton oversaw the publication of five annual World Energy Trilemma reports, of which this year’s was presented to global energy ministers at the Clean Energy Ministerial in San Francisco. The ‘energy trilemma’ provides a clear framework to deliver the energy transformation and make sustainable energy systems a reality. The World Energy Trilemma report looks at how efficiently member countries’ policies are managing the energy trilemma: how to deliver energy securely, to mitigate the environmental impact of energy production and use, and to ensure energy is available to all and at an affordable price.
Africa Regional meeting
The Africa Energy Indaba brings together international and continental experts to share their insights and solutions to Africa’s energy crisis, while simultaneously exploring the vast energy development opportunities on offer in Africa! Adopted by the World Energy Council as its African regional event and presented by the South African National Energy Association (SANEA), the Africa Energy Indaba is supported by the African Union and the NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency. World Energy Council FELS secure place on Forbes 30 under 30 in energy
Every year, Forbes search for promising young people working on energy issues or in the energy industry. They seek them out from major oil companies to university research labs to Silicon Valley venture capitalist firm, then pass on a shortlist to three judges to get their input on who they think deserves to end up on the final list.
The Council spoke to Richard Walsh and Samir Ibrahim, two World Energy Council Future Energy Leaders (FEL) who secured a place on the final list this year. A panel of A-list legends in their fields were joined by 30 under 30 alums tasked with vetting and voting on the finalists.
Energiewende is inspiration, but not a blueprint for the World
German energy policy is noticed widely abroad. However, a majority of energy professionals do not see German energy policies as a global blueprint according to a recently published survey by the German member committee of the World Energy Council. The Survey, German energy policy – a blueprint for the world, found that internationally, a large majority of the respondents (58%) are closely following the German energy demand. For one quarter of the European respondents surveyed among energy experts in 42 countries around the world, the Energiewende has either triggered a national debate on energy or led to concrete political decisions on energy, whereas the influence is weak only outside Europe.
Tanzanian Executives examine best practices in LNG policy
Tanzania is one of the six initial focus countries of Power Africa, an initiative former US President Barack Obama launched in the summer of 2013, which aims to double electricity access in sub-Saharan Africa by 2018. Recent natural gas discoveries in Tanzania, initial investments in its transmission infrastructure, and the country’s goal, to double electricity access from 15% in 2010 to 30% by 2015, are collectively driving the country’s electricity policy. The World Energy Council’s American member committee, the US Energy Association (USEA), organised a five-day executive exchange as part of their US-Tanzania Utility Partnership.
Austria holds workshop on alternative mobility in Vienna
Electrical mobility in Austria is now in a rapid state of development, the future of driving is electrifying. Charging infrastructures will now be covering areas with a maximum distance of 60 km between charging points. Up till now around 380 charging points at 140 locations have been installed. High speed charging by 50 kW will be possible and the minimum capacity will be 20 kW. For access to charging points the provider “Smatrics” has developed a special App. The Austrian Utilities support this initiative and have founded a cooperative network named “Federal Association of Electrical Mobility in Austria / BEÖ.”
