Momentum builds for the 23rd Congress as 250th Speaker and CNBC media partnerships is announced
With less than 100 days to go until the 23rd World Energy Congress takes place in Istanbul, the 250th world class speaker has been confirmed. In addition, leading business network CNBC has been announced as the official business media partner for what is regarded as the most influential and inclusive gathering of senior leaders from all segments of the energy community. Latest speakers to be confirmed are from two of the major geographies in world energy, Russia and China: Sergey Kirienko, Chief Operating Officer of Russia’s Rosatom and Jinhang Chen, Chairman of the China Datang Corporation. This underlines the importance of this event in shaping the future of the global energy landscape at a time when the industry is at a crucial transition.
Top energy leaders convene in Latin America
With the backdrop of high uncertainty for the energy sector, the World Energy Council gathered energy leaders from across Latin America in Rio de Janeiro on 12 and 13 July to discuss the future of the sector. The impact of falling oil prices and the effect that this is having on exports especially in economies that are heavily reliant on these was a key emphasis of the meeting. The meeting focused on the outlook for the region to 2035 with discussions on the impact of falling revenues and national GDP growth on the development of new and renewable energy sources following the historic climate agreement in Paris as well as the role of regional integration.
World Energy Council helps shape new UN Strategic Framework
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and World Bank President Jim Yong Kim convened the fifth meeting of the Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) Advisory Board on 15 and 16 June. The meeting, held in conjunction with the 10th European Development Days, was hosted by the European Commission at its headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. Marie-José Nadeau and Christoph Frei, Chair and Secretary General of the World Energy Council, attended the high-level meeting to help shape the new ‘Strategic Framework for Results’ of the SEforAll.
New E-mobility report distributed at G20 Energy Ministers’ meeting
The World Energy Council recently launched a new report on E-mobility which was distributed before Ministers during the G20 Energy Ministers’ meeting in Beijing with the support of Berat Albyarak, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey. The World Energy Perspective 2016: ‘E-mobility: closing the emissions gap’, published by the Council in collaboration with Accenture Strategy, examines the growth in sales of electric vehicles (EVs) as the latest technologies to increase average fuel efficiency and meet these stringent economy standards, set in all three markets, referred to as the “EV gap”.
Romanian FELS declare their vison for the future of energy at FOREN 2016
Romanian Future Energy Leaders (FEL Romania) had an opportunity to propose innovative ideas at a round-table themed ‘Ener-Generation for Tomorrow’s Challenges’, during this year’s World Energy Council’s Central & Eastern Europe Regional Energy Forum (FOREN 2016).The workshop highlighted both current and future challenges facing the energy sector and sought to identify how young energy professionals can best be prepared to overcome the energy paradigm shift focused on innovative smart technologies, based on a solid set of values, in order to fully benefit from these evolving technologies.
World Energy Council explores global energy at Icelandic seminar
Iceland is the world’s largest green energy producer per capita and largest electricity producer per capita. Although the share of renewables in total primary energy is 85% in Iceland, which is among the highest in the world, the Icelandic policy is to increase it further in coming years. In this context, around 40 experts gathered in Reykjavik to discuss the most burning energy issues that are keeping energy leaders awake at night and possible implications for Iceland in 2016, at a seminar on 10 June.
FOREN 2016:Secure and sustainable energy for the region
Prominent economic and energy policymakers from Romania and Central and South-Eastern European countries participated in the 13th Central & Eastern Europe Regional Energy Forum – FOREN 2016, organised by the Romanian member committee of the World Energy Council between 12 and 16 June. With the theme ‘Secure and sustainable energy for the region’, the forum brought together high level experts who discussed the latest developments high on the energy agenda including future of electricity, oil and gas, coal, nuclear, renewables as well as political and economic decisions to be made to achieve secure and sustainable energy in the region.
Algerian committee successfully completes first Issues Monitor deep dive
Noureddine Bouterfa, Chair of the Algerian Member Committee, and newly appointed Minister of Energy, hosted an event to discuss key issues addressed in the Council’s 2016 World Energy Trilemma Report ‘Defining Measures to Accelerate the Energy Transition’, as well as critical uncertainties keeping Algeria’s energy leaders awake at night. As part of this event, represented by more than 50 participants including from the Ministry of Energy & Finance, academia & research institutes, as well as key energy companies such as Sonelgaz, Sonatrach and Naftal, the Algerian member committee also successfully completed its first Issues Monitor deep-dive.
Energy leaders commit to policies to drive innovation in energy efficiency
Leading energy efficiency technologies, policies and business models that can accelerate progress in the United States and other countries, were explored at the 27th Annual Efficiency Forum co–sponsored by the World Energy Council US member committee (the United States Energy Association) and Johnson Controls. As energy systems are evolving, with traditional users acting as both energy consumers and producers, both “prosumers” and traditional energy suppliers are employing distributed generation, energy storage, demand response and information technologies to transform these systems.
Congress News
In light of the events of 15/16 July in Turkey the Council and the Turkish Organising Committee want to reassure you that we are closely monitoring the situation in relation to the 23rd World Energy Congress in Istanbul. Law and order has been quickly restored and people are returning to normal life. Preparations for the Congress are progressing well and we will continue to keep you fully updated of its status.
New Rules of trade report to be presented at APEC Market Access Group meeting
The World Energy Council will be presenting a new report at the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) MAG (Market Access Group) meeting taking place in Lima, Peru between 15-28 August 2016, in the context of a wider event, the Third Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM3) and other related meetings.
The Rules of Trade Knowledge Network’s World Energy Perspectives report: Non- tariff measures: next steps for catalysing the low-carbon economy, is the second report in a series looking at how an open global trade and investment regime concerning energy and environmental goods and services, can foster the transition to a low carbon economy.
