World Energy Trilemma report receives positive reception
This year’s World Energy Trilemma report was launched at the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) meeting hosted in the city of Merida, Mexico during the opening ministerial plenary on 27 May 2015.
Many of our member committees organised outreach activity to highlight the report’s findings which were drawn from engagement with over 2,500 energy leaders. Read how some of our member committees see the recommendations applying to their country.
Energy and Geostrategy: Two concepts that are invariably interlinked
Energy-related factors have a bearing on the global geopolitical and geostrategic scenario in the same way as the general geopolitical framework places conditions on the parameters that define the energy environment.
Launched in Madrid by the World Energy Council Spain, and co-edited with the Spanish Ministry of Defence, “Energy and Geostrategy 2015” reveals how a variety of events have had a major effect on the layout of the geostrategic global energy map.
Investment needed to realise Africa’s enormous energy potential
Addressing the 9th German-African Energy Forum in Hamburg, Dr Stefan Liebig, Chairman of the Africa Association of the German Industry, said: “Without the establishment of an energy infrastructure, there won’t be any great economic growth on the African continent.” Philippe Joubert, Executive Chair of the Global Electricity Initiative, pictured, presented the findings of the latest global survey of utility CEOs.
Council strengthens involvement with Water for Energy Framework
The World Energy Council is strengthening its involvement with the Water for Energy Framework, W4EF, said Younghoon David Kim , Co – Chair of the World Energy Council, when he addressed the7th World Water Forum in Korea. The W4EF was established to develop a common framework for the evaluation which reports on the energy impacts on water.
Energy leaders gather in Ecuador
Industry representatives and government officials gathered at the National Seminar of the Ecuadorian Electricity Sector organised by the Ecuadorian World Energy Council members committee when it met to address the future of the electricity sector in Ecuador. A major challenge is to provide electricity to remote areas.
Active Hungary young professionals in energy
Hungary Young Professionals in Energy, HYPE, has been developed by members of the Council’s Future Energy Leaders programme with the support of the Hungarian members committee. It is a thriving group whose young professional members pride themselves on writing White Papers such as the forthcoming paper on new financial opportunities in the energy sector, and organising monthly workshops focussing on different areas of energy with leading industry figures on the panel. China learns from Germany
Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Schiffer, centre, the Executive Chair of the World Energy Resources programme of the World Energy Council, came to Peking University Cafe 1898 to give a keynote speech on ‘German energy policy – its impact nationally and across Europe’. The Peking University Cafe 1898 is named after the founding of Peking University (PKU), and is the first coffee house in China with the theme of alumni entrepreneurship. The audience included representation from the Chinese Government.
2015 Canadian Energy Summit – “Telling the Energy Story”
More than 140 individuals attended the Energy Summit in Canada representing a diverse cross section of the energy community from: Energy Council of Canada members, energy companies, academia, the financial community and professional service firms. The theme of the Summit was “Telling the Energy Story”. Nine sessions added ‘’energy chapters’’ to the Canadian story covering: key external influences; economics; energy leaders insights; energy infrastructure issues; new energy transitions; aboriginal – energy sector partnerships; financing; and, how to tell the energy story most effectively. Highlights of the programme included perspectives from the federal government and the Ontario Ministry of Energy.

Forthcoming report launch: German Member Committee Report explores synergies in the European electricity market
A new report, “Security of supply: a pan-European approach – The opportunities and requirements of greater cooperation across European electricity markets”, produced with the market research firm Prognos, is launched in Brussels on 1 July. The report looks at the advantages of closer cooperation in European electricity markets and electricity market integration. It analyses the potential conditions to intensify integration of European electricity and grid markets and identifies potential synergies. Sandra Winkler, Director of Policies and Member Services at the World Energy Council, said: “The report that our German member committee has produced will make for very interesting reading given the importance of electricity market integration both in Europe and across the world. This and other work will feed nicely into our 2016 World Energy Trilemma report which will focus on market design issues across the energy sector.” The German version of the study is already available here. The English version will be presented and discussed during a meeting on 1 July in Brussels with experts from politics and industry, including Dr. Leonhard Birnbaum, Vice Chair Europe World Energy Council and will be available on the Council website.
