The 23rd World Energy Congress, which is taking place in Istanbul,between 9 and 13 October, has announced Strive Masiyiwa, Group Executive Chairman and Founder, Econet, South Africa as the 150th speaker.
Confirmed speakers also include Wang Binghua, Chairman, State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), China and Maximus Johnity Ongkili, Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Government of Malaysia, Malaysia.

Canadian Energy Sector gathers

Our Canadian Member Committee, the Energy Council of Canada, held their first meeting of the year on February 2 in Ottawa. The discussions focused on the “energy value chain” plus two presentations: one highlighting the implications for Canada from the COP-21 conference highlighting actions already underway; and, a closing presentation on critical issues for the year ahead and beyond. Kim Rudd, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources of Canada, opened the meeting highlighting the new government’s interim review principles.

Task Force discusses European market design

European Market Design Task Force meeting with European Commission

A European Market Design Task Force comprised of member committees from across Europe met on 22 February in Brussels with the European Commission. Our European Members have already carried out a survey to identify issues that will become relevant in 5-10 years, but are not currently on the Commission’s Market Design reform agenda.
In April the Task Force will present a paper to European Commission officials, which is likely to inform European market designs in coming years.

Unconventional Gas Report and Council meetings at Africa Energy Indaba

At Africa Energy Indaba the World Energy Resources report ‘Unconventional gas, a global phenomenon’ describing how growing supplies of unconventional gas has the potential to reflect a significant share of the natural gas supply globally was launched.
Also the first World Energy Council Africa Regional meeting of the year took place at a meeting on 15th February, with around 50 delegates from 10 countries attending which provided the opportunity to discuss Council business and the 2016 Council plan for Africa.

Brazil workshop explores challenges ahead

The future of energy in Brazil: Workshop attracts wide audience

The Brazilian member committee recently held a workshop looking at the future of energy in Brazil to 2060, based on the Council’s Scenarios and Trilemma work. The event included presentations by Professor Karl Rose, as well as representatives from leading companies and academia. Almost 80 energy experts from Brazil as well as from Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela attended.
The workshop consolidated important messages about the challenges that Brazil should pursue in supplying energy to 2060 and to better manage energy demand in a more sustainable way.

In an interview with Inside, Jaroslav Snajdr, from the Czech republic, who has also been nominated to the Forbes 30 under 30 list, explains what it means to be a FEL- 100. He sees one of the benefits of being a FEL-100 as an opportunity to build peer relationships and work together on current topics of interest.
As to the future, Jaroslav believes that the many tasks ahead and the increasingly important role of technology will lead to a redefinition of the energy sector as we know it.

In the talk Schiffer explained that there are lessons for Thailand and other countries that can be learnt from the Germany energy transition, but that there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution’.
