Council Chair calls for speed, focus and results
At the high level ‘Global Action Day’ on the opening day of the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) in Abu Dhabi, Ms Nadeau, Chair, addressed the plenary session ‘The role of cooperative action in supporting the future of global energy and boosting innovation’. Her intervention followed on from the opening addresses given by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius. World Energy Resources E-storage report heralds bright future
In a session organised by the European Commission the E-storage report was launched at the World Future Energy Summit, Abu Dhabi, to great acclaim from media and many others. The report says that a narrow focus on cost alone is misleading and calls for the true value of energy storage to be recognised by accounting for both cost and revenue benefits. It also estimates that with new technology, energy storage costs will fall by as much as 70% over the next 15 years.
Cooperation with China grows
Younghoon David Kim, Co-Chair of the World Energy Council met with Nur Bekri, Administrator of the National Energy Administration (NEA) and Vice-Chair of the National Development and Reform Commission of China at the NEA headquarters in Beijing on 8 January. Both parties agreed to deepen cooperation between China and the World Energy Council and discussed China’s representation at the forthcoming World Energy Congress in Istanbul.
Electric power systems must be more flexible
Latest findings of the World Energy Council Renewables Electricity Systems, RES, Integration report were showcased at a meeting organised by the Indian member committee in New Delhi in December. The meeting was attended by nearly 100 senior executives that included Shri P K Pujari, Chair of the Indian member committee and Secretary of Power. One of the preliminary conclusions of the report is that electric power systems must be more flexible to the growing number of volatile, large and small-scale distributed generation.
FEL community growing nationally and globally
Five new nationally based Future Energy Leader (FEL) groups have been formed in Austria, Egypt, New Zealand, Nigeria and Zimbabwe, with one in development in South Africa.
Pirjo Jantunen, FEL Chair, said: “I welcome all the new national FEL groups which will complement our global FEL-100 community and look forward to meeting everyone at the Congress where there will be many opportunities to exchange experiences.” To learn more about the new FEL groups.
A warm welcome to our latest partner
The World Energy Council and Arup, the leading global engineering firm,has recently signed an agreement to be a Project Supporter for World Energy Scenarios with a special focus on urban innovation.
Christoph Frei, Secretary General, said: “Arup will be providing associated perspectives and analysis on a selection of resources areas that include e-storage, e-mobility, energy efficiency, solar energy, waste-to-energy, energy-water-food nexus and resilience.”
Looking forward to 2016 Africa Energy Indaba
At the World Energy Council’s annual African regional event on 16 -17 February in Johannesburg, over 600 African energy leaders including Ministers and CEOs from over 20 countries will gather to address the key challenges to shape the future of energy in the continent.
Amongst other issues, they will be looking at the institutional changes that are needed to balance the World Energy Trilemma goals of energy security, energy equity and environmental sustainability in Africa.
Combined Heat and Power has an important role in Poland
The Polish Member Committee, supported by the former Polish Ministry of Economy, now the Ministry of Energy, recently held a conference entitled: ‘Role of combined heat and power (CHP) in Polish Energy Policy to 2050’. Henryk Majchrzak, President of the Polish Member Committee, said: “The high-efficiency of CHP means that it can make a very significant contribution to improving our National Power System.” Tomasz Dąbrowski, counsellor in the new Ministry of Energy, announced that Poland’s priority projects to 2050 would include CHP.
Resources to Scenarios
Ahead of the World Energy Congress, our flagship studies are coming together. A Resources Study Group has been held in London to review data received from recent Member Committee Surveys, discuss initial findings and to ensure that chapters are in the right track.
Hans Wilhelm-Schiffer, Executive Chair of World Energy Resources said: “Excellent progress is being made with first drafts of resource reports on solar, carbon capture storage and utilisation, nuclear and hydro, all shortly ready for review.”

2015 was one of the most significant years which the global energy community has experienced; we saw OPEC take action on oil prices and production, as well as talks leading up to the historic COP21 agreement in Paris. Abu Dhabi World Energy Congress dates set for 7th to 14th September 2019
The dates for the World Energy Congress in Abu Dhabi have been set for 7th to 14th of September 2019. The official signing took place at the Executive Assembly in Addis Ababa and already plans have started. Christoph Frei, Secretary General, said: “We were delighted to have signed this contract in Addis Ababa at our Executive Assembly. The leadership shown by the UAE team will ensure that we will be well placed to build on the success of our Istanbul Congress which will take place in October 2016. I am sure that these two events will add significantly to the post COP21 energy agenda.
