Colombia: Colombia recently moved forward its Future Energy Leaders Training programme in Colombia with over 100 students taking part in classes given by Dr Rubén Darío, Daniel Díaz and Jairo García.

Rachel Kyte, currently serving as the World Bank Group’s Vice President and Special Envoy for Climate Change, has been appointed the new CEO of the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) initiative with effect from the first of January 2016. Christoph Frei said: “SE4All and The World Energy Council share common goals. We’re looking forward to working closely with Rachel in her new position as she leads it into a new chapter.”

Energy Efficiency Technologies Knowledge Network agrees action plan

The Energy Efficiency Technologies Knowledge Network, EET KN, chaired by Dr.Klaus Willnow, recently met in London to discuss the focus, contents and schedule for the 2016 report. The EET KN has decided to build on the findings of their last report on the energy value chain and focus on the assessment of a few selected technologies. Additional topics will address the impact of IT on the energy industry and consumers and a new business model. The report will also cover consumer roles and expectations.

Delegates attending Tokyo workshop

How to secure reliable power supplies to mega cities

Tokyo Electric Power Company, TEPCO, has been invited by he Japanese Member Committee to lead a study entitled “How to Secure Reliable Power Supply to Mega Cities”. The latest insights on the work to date were presented at a workshop where around 30 experts from Asian countries gathered. This initiative, which is closely linked with the World Energy Council’s Financing Resilient Energy Infrastructure project, has been underway since March. The final report will be presented at the Executive Assembly in Ethiopia.

Against a background of energy reforms that are taking place in Mexico covering regulatory markets, low carbon economies and resilience strategies, Christoph Frei presented a speech at the VII joint annual congress of the energy sector associations in Acapulco, Mexico in September. He highlighted issues emerging from the World Energy Council’s Issues Monitor with a warning that if countries do not pay full attention to Trilemma criteria, energy markets will suffer.

Beirut Energy Forum: new launches and support for Congress

The World Energy Council Beirut Energy Forum in September saw a number of official launches including the 2nd National Energy Efficiency Action of Lebanon, the National Renewable Energy Action Plan for Lebanon and Energy Awareness Awards. Over the three day event 800 delegates attended seminars with the Minister of Information for Lebanon expressing keen interest in the World Energy Congress in 2016.

Discussions on regional integration

First South American Forum in Quito, Ecuador

The first South American Energy Forum to promote regional integration projects in Latin America organised by the World Energy Council and the Union of South American Nations with the support of the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy took place in Quito, Ecuador in September. The Forum was opened by the Vice-President of Ecuador and attracted over 180 participants from 17 countries and 5 Ministers. A new agreement with the Comisión de Integración Energética Regional was also signed at the meeting.

Speaking at the VIII International Congress Bolivia Gas & Energy 2015, Raul Kieffer, Bolivian MC Secretary said: “We started the Congress with the question of whether the next decade would be a period of crisis or opportunity. At the end of the Congress we concluded that we are facing a great opportunity that should not be missed. It is in our hands to face these challenges.” The Congress was attended by the Vice President and Minister for Energy for Bolivia and over 600 participants.

The report, which will be launched on 1 October, says that Governments alone cannot cover the costs and private investors must join in the funding of resilience. Seven operational and financial recommendations are made that will improve the approach to the management and financing of extreme weather conditions. We encourage all member committees to use the report package that they have received to organise their own national launches.
