Meet the Council’s new Vice Chair for Latin America
We talk to Claudia Cronenbold Harnes, the Council’s new Vice Chair for Latin America, about plans to increase the number of member committees within the region and the biggest energy challenges facing Latin America and Caribbean (LAC),including the proposed Bolivia-Brazil gas pipeline Claudia is the first woman to lead the CHBE. She also chairs the Bolivian Committee of the World Energy Council and is First Vice President of the Santa Cruz Private Businessmen Federation (Federación de Empresarios Privados de Santa Cruz, FEPSC). From 2004 to 2009 she was accountable for the portfolio decisions and business evaluations in the Petrobras International Area. The portfolio had projects in 27 countries and throughout the hydrocarbon chain: upstream, downstream, gas and energy.

Regional integration key to unlocking economic potential in Latin America
The new energy scenarios report by the World Energy Council identifies a critical need for large-scale investment and regional integration to unlock greater economic potential and mitigate risks for the energy sector in Latin America and the Caribbean. In the report entitled ‘Latin American & the Caribbean Energy Scenarios to 2060’, three scenarios “Samba”, “Tango” and “Rock” present a distinct trajectory for the energy sector to 2060. The World Energy Council has identified, in its Tango Scenario, that if the Latin American & the Caribbean (LAC) region is to achieve a sustainable economic growth of 2.7% to 2060, an effective system of broad-ranging regional and international governance, including strong collective climate change policies and regional integration of energy systems, is essential.

In a ceremony held during the 8th Clean Energy Ministerial meeting in Beijing, Christoph Frei, Secretary General of the World Energy Council and Leonardo Beltrán Rodríguez, Deputy Secretary for Planning and Energy Transition of Mexico, signed an agreement to host a World Energy Leaders’ Summit in Mexico City on September 12 – 13, 2017. The summit will form the highlight of a week of energy events entitled Dialogues for the Future of Energy Mexico 2017 (DEMEX) organised by Mexico’s Ministry of Energy (SENER). The 2017 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum hosted the signing of an agreement between the World Energy Council and the State Atomic Energy Corporation (ROSATOM), to officially welcome Rosatom as the Council’s latest Patron. The document was signed by World Energy Council Secretary General, Dr Christoph Frei, and Rosatom’s First Deputy Director General for Corporate Development and International Business, Kirill Komarov. The World Energy Council’s Patronage program aims to engage leading energy companies in joint research on key energy issues impacting the future development of the energy system.

In a fast-changing and complex geopolitical environment, it is hard to forecast the evolution of the global geopolitical energy framework, both in the short and long-term. Nevertheless, both the geopolitical and energy agendas for supply and price of hydrocarbons have become significantly more connected over the past year. In this context, the Spanish Committee of the World Energy Council (CECME), in collaboration with the Spanish Energy Club (ENERCLUB), and the Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies (IEEE), presented the 4th edition of Energy and Geostrategy 2017 (Energia 2017) at an event held at Repsol headquarters on 11 May.

Building consensus for variable renewable integration
In light of the growing importance of renewables and especially Variable Renewable Energy Sources (VRES) all over the world, policymakers and energy leaders are addressing emerging issues to ensure continued growth of variable renewables and their successful integration in electricity systems. On 31 March, the Conseil Français de l’Énergie, the French member committee of the World Energy Council, organised a seminar on variable renewables integration in electricity systems, opened by its Chair Olivier Appert, that gathered a full house of energy experts in Paris. The seminar was an opportunity for Jean Eudes Moncomble, Secretary General of the French member committee, to present the World Energy Council’s 2016 report, “Variable renewables integration in electricity systems: How to get it right”, produced in partnership with CESI SPA.

Blockchain tops agenda at Insights workshop
Growing digitalisation and decentralisation in the energy sector means that new technologies such as blockchain applications are becoming more visible, and are gaining momentum in the energy and utilities sector. A blockchain is a distributed database that is used to maintain a continuously growing list of records, called blocks. A blockchain is typically managed by a peer-to-peer network collectively adhering to a protocol for validating new blocks. In a workshop held in London organised by the World Energy Council on 15 May, Ewald Hesse, of the Energy Web Foundation, outlined areas where blockchain technology can make a difference to the energy sector.
Tanzanian executives examine reverse power auctions in Tanzania
Tanzania has 1,591 MW of installed grid generation capacity and approximately 76 MW in mini-grid systems to serve its population of over 51 million people. While these numbers are continuously increasing, electricity production meets less than 15 percent of the demand per year and only 30 percent of the population is connected to the grid. Within this energy context, Tanzanian agencies and companies charged with developing and regulating electricity generation, transmission and distribution, took part in a ten-day executive exchange to Brazil, conducted by the World Energy Council’s American member committee (USEA), as part of the Power Africa Initiative.
The Council welcomes Vietnam as its latest direct member
The World Energy Council is pleased to welcome the Vietnam Energy Association as its newest direct member, bringing the number of direct members to five. With more than 95 member committees the Council now has a presence in 100 countries. The Vietnam Green Energy Network is a new organisation established in November 2016 under the Vietnam Energy Association, which has a close relationship with the Vietnamese government. Key energy companies such as Vietnam Electricity (EVN) are members of the Association. They are currently in the process of developing and launching their organisation, and one of their main missions is to become a full member of the Council and create a wider link with the international energy community.
