World Energy Council welcomes new Regional Vice Chair

As the Council welcomes its new Vice Chair for Asia Pacific & South East Asia, Shigeru Muraki, who succeeded Arup Choudhury, talks about his plans for the next three years and the vision for his role. Since graduating with a degree in Engineering in Applied Chemistry from the University of Tokyo in 1972, Mr Muraki has been involved in Japan’s Gas industry for more than 44 years.
He has been involved in international business including the procurement of natural gases for more than 20 years. He was appointed Executive Vice President of Tokyo Gas in 2010 and Vice Chairman in 2014 and since retiring last year, is currently serving as Executive Advisor, and working for the Japanese government.

2016 Trilemma report receives warm welcome at CEM

For the second year running the World Energy Council was invited to present the World Energy Trilemma report to the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM7). The meeting, which was hosted by US Secretary of Energy, Ernest Monitz, welcomed energy ministers and other high-level delegates from 23 countries and the European Union to San Francisco.
During the closed ministerial sessions on 1 June, the 2016 World Energy Trilemma report was laid before ministers by Christoph Frei, the Council’s Secretary General.

As the World Energy Council welcome’s this year’s 35 new participants into its Future Energy Leaders (FEL) programme, Mercy Manyuchi talks to WEC Inside about her upcoming plans as a new member, while fellow FEL Renzo talks about his experiences to date. Qualified as a professional Chemical Engineer, Mercy is currently employed by the Harare Institute of Technology, Zimbabwe, as a researcher. She is mainly interested in renewable energy technologies and recently received a Total Startupper of The Year Award for her InstiBriquettes project. Renzo currently works as a Legal Advisor on Energy Markets at COESSINAC in Peru and is passionate about energy and water management issues.

The World Energy Council held all standing committee meetings in London between 8 and 9 June and welcomed representatives of the Council’s member committees from across the globe to discuss key topics in the run up to the World Energy Congress and Executive Assembly week in Istanbul.
The two days of meetings were preceded by a welcome dinner hosted by the board of the Council’s United Kingdom member committee at the historic RoyalSociety.

Participants including journalists from Platts, New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Nikkei (Japan), Xinhua (China) and Cihan News Agency (Turkey), joined Co-chair Kim for an intensive two-hour session which covered topics ranging from the Council’s role in the grand transition of the energy sector to details about this year’s Congress.

The World Energy Council is pleased to welcome Mongolia as its newest member committee today, bringing the number of the Council’s committees to 95. With our four direct memberships, the Council now has a presence in 99 countries. The Mongolian member committee hosted by the Mongolian Federation of Engineering Organisations aims to promote and support safe, affordable, and reliable energy transformation in the region. As part of its work, it will provide a platform for all stakeholders to discuss and work on the future of energy while representing the Mongolian perspective within national, regional and global energy debates.

Operators and industry experts gathered at an event held by the World Energy Council’s Italian member committee to discuss the state of maritime uses and infrastructures for liquefied natural gas (LNG), with particular focus on the Strait of Sicily and Mediterranean region as part of the commitment of Italy to act as a hub for natural gas in the Euro-Mediterranean region. The workshop, “Italy, the hub of natural gas: LNG as an opportunity for maritime transport in the Mediterranean in close collaboration with ConferenzaGNL, was hosted by the Italian Navy in Augusta on 13 May.

New e-mobility report to be launched at G20 Energy Ministers’ meeting

The Council will be launching a new report, which will be presented in the margins of the G20 Energy Ministers’ meeting in Beijing by Berat Albayrak, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey. The World Energy Perspective 2016: ‘Emobility: closing the emissions gap’, published by the Council in collaboration with Accenture Strategy, examines the growth in sales of EVs as the latest technologies to increase average fuel efficiency and meet these stringent economy standards, set in all three markets, referred to as the “EV” gap.

Congress News

Momentum for the 23rd World Energy Congress continues to build. Just this week Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Turkish President, announced he is formally endorsing the Congress and that it will be happening under his auspices. This comes at a vital point as we edge closer to having 250 speakers from more than 80 countries confirmed. The team at Grayling, the official media relations agency for the World Energy Congress is working with confirmed speakers to promote their topics in the international media, so expect to see more from people like Phillipe Joubert and Jerone Van Der Veer in the press over the coming weeks.A number of member committees have also confirmed their intention to attend either as exhibitors or will be bringing a media delegation with them. CNBC have confirmed to be a media partner for the 23rd World Energy Congress. Adverts will start running on the Congress channel from early July so please keep an eye out!
